Art can feel intimidating. We often think we need to be experts to step inside a gallery—but CJ flips that narrative on its head. She’s been making art approachable since 1986, when she opened her first gallery in an old bank building in Monmouth County—hence the name, The Artful Deposit. Since then, she’s built a legacy of community, creativity, and connection.

This episode was extra special as we welcomed someone near and dear to the art scene community—and to me personally—CJ Mugavero, the powerhouse behind The Artful Deposit Gallery located in Bordentown City, NJ – but well known to artists all over the globe.

FROM THERAPIST TO ART CURATOR

CJ’s journey began in art therapy, working with patients in mental health before transitioning into the corporate world, then ultimately blending her passion for healing and art by opening her gallery. For the last 28 years, Bordentown City has been lucky to have her as a staple of the local art scene.

I started with artists early in their careers who are now nationally recognized,” she shared. “The gallery is about connection—art is emotional. You don’t need a degree to appreciate it. You just need to know what you love.”

ART IS FOR EVERYONE

Whether you're starting your collection or just window shopping, CJ makes everyone feel welcome. She compares appreciating art to trying a new dish at a restaurant—you know what you like, and that’s enough. From offering layaway plans to helping couples build registries for their weddings or families gifting art to the next generation, her goal is simple: help people live with art.

Art is powerful,” CJ says. “It can make you cry, remind you of a loved one, or bring peace to a space. During COVID, people started rehanging their art, planting gardens, and really investing in their home environment. Art became their solace.”

CREATING A CULTURE OF YOUNG CREATORS

One of CJ’s favorite initiatives is nurturing the next generation of artists. Through partnerships with Little House of Hope and projects like the Art Rocks series and seasonal window displays, she helps young artists raise money for nonprofits and get inspired by the masters like Van Gogh—all while showcasing their work alongside nationally recognized artists.

She even has kids visiting regularly for a biscuit—okay, they bring their dogs, but it’s all part of the fun vibe that keeps The Artful Deposit at the heart of the community.

COLLECTING WITH CONFIDENCE

CJ also makes it a point to educate customers on the difference between original art and canvas reproductions. “Know what you're buying,” she says. “It’s not about price—it’s about value and connection.”

She’s also happy to refer clients to experts for vintage or estate pieces and goes the extra mile to authenticate what’s worth your investment.

APRIL’S FINAL BUZZ

If you’ve ever been hesitant to step into a gallery, let CJ and The Artful Deposit change that. Whether you're drawn in by a painting of poppies or curious about starting your own collection—there’s something here for everyone.
