A Jersey Buzz Podcast Exclusive Interview

In this episode of The Jersey Buzz Podcast, we had the honor of sitting down with Grandmaster S.L. Martin, a living legend in the world of martial arts. With over seven decades of experience, Grandmaster Martin shares his incredible journey—from his roots in South Philadelphia to the United States Air Force, and ultimately, to founding Green Dragon Kuo Shu Kwan in Bordentown City, NJ.

What unfolded was more than just a conversation about martial arts—it was a heartfelt lesson on discipline, legacy, and the inner power we all have.

From the Air Force to the Dojo: A Life of Discipline

Grandmaster Martin began his martial arts training in 1955, at just 17 years old, while serving in the U.S. Air Force. Originally drawn to martial arts as a means of self-protection, he quickly discovered a deeper calling.

“I was stationed in places where I was fortunate to train with masters, many of whom were hesitant to teach Americans just 10 years after the war. But the military encouraged martial arts as part of combative training, and I took the opportunity.”

After 23 years of service, he retired from the Air Force in 1997—but never stopped training.

Martial Arts for the Mind, Body, and Soul

Grandmaster Martin sees martial arts not just as physical training, but as a path to self-discipline, emotional regulation, and personal growth.

“Martial arts is about structure and respect. It helped me grow up. It commands more than physical strength—it builds character. Especially for youth today, it’s a way to build confidence from the inside out.”

He notes how martial arts can help those struggling with focus, anxiety, or even ADHD—by instilling routines and mental clarity through movement and mindfulness.

 “You Are the Martial Arts”

When asked how martial arts has shaped his life, Martin responded with a powerful truth:

“I don’t do martial arts. I am martial arts.”

This level of commitment shows in how he teaches, treats his students like family, and emphasizes respect, humility, and balance in every lesson. Martial arts, he believes, is about improving who you are—not overpowering someone else.

The Power of Breath and Movement

We talked about the rise in interest around breathwork and mind-body health, especially as people seek natural ways to reduce stress.

“Most people don’t breathe correctly. Martial arts teaches proper breathing, circulation, and energy flow. Breath control relieves stress, and stress is a killer.”

He encourages older adults to explore practices like Tai Chi or Qigong, which support balance, mobility, and mental peace. In Eastern cultures, it’s common to see elders in parks at 5 AM doing slow, intentional movements. In the West, we have some catching up to do.

Breaking Stereotypes in the 1970s

Martin also shared the challenges of promoting Chinese martial arts in the U.S. during the 1970s—when most people only knew about it from exaggerated Kung Fu films.

“People saw the flying kicks and thought it wasn’t real. But just like cowboy movies, that wasn’t reality. The true martial arts are deep, spiritual, and practical. Not just for defense—but for life.”

Community, Competition, and Family

For nearly 50 years, Martin has hosted martial arts tournaments that bring together schools from around the region. These events foster camaraderie, cultural exchange, and growth.

“I’ve made lifelong friends—students from Europe, Asia, even Brazil. One of them calls me his American father and keeps a photo of me in his home.”

These relationships highlight the power of martial arts to bridge cultures and create global family bonds.
