A Buzz-Worthy Local Legend: Jim Heupel, the Man Behind the Weed Wacker and Community Spirit

If you've ever driven through Bordentown and seen a guy out with a leaf blower, weed wacker, or lending a helping hand—you've probably seen Jim. He's more than a friendly face. Jim embodies what it means to show up for your community.

In this heartfelt episode, host April Sette sits down with Jim, a long-time Bordentown native with deep roots and even deeper pride for his hometown. From his grandparents' local shop and youthful memories in the funeral home to designing and building Laura’s Salon his wife Laura creates beauty everyday!  Jim has quite literally shaped the streets of this Historic River Town, called Bordentown City, NJ.

COMMUNITY STARTS WITH ACTION

Jim isn’t just talking about change—he’s making it. Whether it's starting spontaneous clean-up days, joining the Historical and Parks Committees, or attending township meetings to stay informed and involved, he reminds us how one person's initiative can spark collective impact.

"I just saw things that needed to be done and started doing them. Then other people showed up. Now we have a crew. We clean, we care, we show up."

His story highlights something important: getting involved doesn't require permission. It starts with paying attention, taking action, and trusting that community will follow.

PRESERVING THE PAST, BUILDING THE FUTURE

Jim and his wife have also stepped up as community sponsors, supporting local art like sculptures and murals that honor the town's rich Revolutionary history. From the statue project to assisting with restorations of community spaces, they exemplify giving back in both sweat and spirit.

Bordentown isn’t just another small town. It’s a place with stories going back to 1682, where Joseph Bonaparte once lived, and the first NJ railroad ran through. Jim doesn’t just know the history—he lives it, protects it, and passes it forward.

WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE? GET INVOLVED

Want to make a difference in your own neighborhood? Jim’s advice is simple:

  • Attend your town's council meetings.

  • Join a committee aligned with your interests (history, parks, trails, etc.).

  • Visit your Town’s website to explore organizations.

  • Don’t just complain—contribute.

"When you show up and speak up, that’s how change happens."
